Who is Wayne Shorter ex-wife Teruko Nakagami?

Wayne Shorter is an American jazz saxophonist and composer who played jazz music. As a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and subsequently its lead composer, Shorter rose to fame in the late 1950s. He first played in Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet in the 1960s before co-founding Weather Report, a jazz fusion outfit. He led a band that made almost 20 records.

His music has received recognition from all around the world as well as appreciation from critics and has several pieces that have evolved into jazz standards. However, it is really unfortunate that the 12-time Grammy winner, Shorter has passed on today, 2nd of March, 2023.

Teruko is the first woman Shorter married. Shorter met Teruko (Irene) Nakagami in 1961. They were later married and had a daughter, Miyako. Some of his compositions are copyrighted as “Miyako Music” and Shorter dedicated the pieces “Miyako” and “Infant Eyes” to his daughter. However, the couple separated in 1964.

Teruko Nakagami was a Japanese American woman named born in Chicago. Irene was Nakagami’s original name; but, after meeting Shorter, she changed it to Teruko. When Nakagami was six years old, she and her twin sister were sent to a California internment camp for Japanese Americans.
